Installation

Q: "An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file: DeleteFile failed; code 5. Access denied."
A:

This means the installer tries to update a file that is currently in use by another program.

Just click on 'ignore' and let the installation continue.

Q: Is it possible to uninstall only a couple components of the K-Lite (Mega) Codec Pack and keep the rest?
A:

No. You'll have to uninstall the whole codec pack. Then install it again with only those components selected that you want.

Q: I get an error with 'MatroskaSplitter.ax' during installation. What is wrong?
A:

Click on 'ignore' and let the installation finish. Everything will work, except for the Matroska Splitter.

You are probably getting this error because there are one or more crucial Windows components missing on your system. Most likely comctl32.dll or DCOM.

Playback

Q: I can't play a video file
A:

* If it is an .avi file, open it in the GSpot tool. There you can see which codecs the file needs.

* You can also try to re-install the K-Lite (Mega) Codec Pack. Read the information at the beginning of the installation to see what components you might need. Not all components are enabled by default on the components screen, so you might need to enable some.

Q: When I resize (or full-screen) the Media Player Classic window, the video goes to black while the audio continues
A:

If you have a NVidia GeForce graphics card, then you should update it's drivers.

Q: Subtitles in the Ogg container (.ogm) won't display
A:

* Make sure you are using a player that is capable of displaying subtitles. For example Media Player Classic.

* Make sure DirectVobSub is installed.

* You should enable the option called "enable all streams" in the Ogg splitter.

Start > Programs > K-Lite Codec Pack > Configuration > Codec Tweak Tool

Q: I have installed DC-DSP, but it doesn't seem to work when I use Media Player Classic
A:

You need to disable the internal audio switcher of Media Player Classic.

Options > Filters > Audio Switcher

Windows Media

Q: I can't play WMV files.
A:

Install the following packages from Microsoft:

Windows Media Format 9 runtimes
Windows Media Codecs
Windows Media Codecs

Q: I get some message about acquiring a license when I play certain media files
A:

That means that the file is DRM protected. DRM is a copyright protection method. You generally need to get (read: buy) a license to be able to play the file.

RealMedia

Q: I can't repeat (or stop and play again) RealMedia files in Media Player Classic
A:

This is a 'bug' (or limitation) in Media Player Classic.

The only way to replay the file is to re-open the file.

Q: I can't play a .rm file that contains unicode characters in Media Player Classic
A:

Rename the file from .rm to .rmvb

Q: I have problems playing (streaming) RealMedia files in Media Player Classic
A:

First make sure you have properly installed the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or Real Alternative.

Secondly, make sure you have a recent version of Microsoft DirectX installed.

Thirdly, there are some settings for Media Player Classic which you can change. Open Media Player Classic and in the top menu go to:

View > Options > Playback > Output

Try putting the settings for 'RealMedia Video' and 'DirectShow Video' to 'system default'. Close Media Player Classic and try to play your file(s) again.

View > Options > Player > Formats

Try putting 'Real-Time Streaming Protocol handler' to RealMedia.

Q: How do I play RealMedia files in Windows Media Player?
A:

You need to have the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or Real Alternative installed. The 'RealMedia DirectShow filter' and 'RealMedia codecs' that come with these two packages are required.

Now change the following file types so that they open in Windows Media Player:

.ra .rm .ram .rmvb

See the above topic for how you can change a file type.

Windows worries

Q: Some .avi files cause a crash in explorer.exe
A:

Start > Run > type regedit and press enter

Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

If there is an entry in there with the name DivX in it, delete it.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler\
Delete the value (default). It will then appear as an empty value.

Close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

Q: How do I change a file association?
A:

Open the Windows Explorer (hold WindowsKey and press 'E')

In the top menu go to: Tools > Folder Options > File Types

Now select the file type that you want to change and click on 'change'. Select the program that you want to use to open the selected file type and press OK.

If the file type is not yet in the list, then click on 'New' add it to the list yourself.

Q: How do I disable thumbnail view of video files in Windows XP?
A:

Start > Run > regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

Q: Windows Explorer crashes when I browse a folder that contains video files

A:

Take a look at the guides section of Doom9.org
